Essay Writing Competition / Debating Competition

ESSAY WRITING COMPETITION IN ENGLISH / TAMIL FOR PG STUDENTS IN ECONOMICS

Malcolm & Elizabeth Adiseshiah Trust has been conducting Essay Writing Competition for the Post Graduate Students of City colleges since 2005-06 to commemorate the memory of Mrs. Elizabeth Adiseshiah, wife of Dr. Malcolm Adiseshiah. During the first year the competition was held only in English and we received suggestions from the participants and colleges that the competition be held both in English and Tamil. The Board approved the suggestion during its meeting held on 7.6.06. Since 2007-08 we have been conducting the competition both in English and Tamil. In 2008-09 the Trust has introduced Debating competition for the students of Economics at the UG level and this is being continued.

It was decided at the trust Board meeting held on 20.11.09 that from this year (2009-10) onwards the prize money for the Essay Writing /Debating competitions may be revised as:

I Prize              -           Rs.1500

II Prize             -           Rs.1000

III Prize            -           Rs.500

The Board also decided to give the prizes by way of gift coupons from reputed publishers / book sellers instead of cash so that the Prize winners can purchase the books they desire within the monetary limit mentioned.

Details for this year Annual Essay Writing & Elocution Competition

Venue: Ethiraj College for Women (Autonomous), Victoria Crescent Building, Ethiraj Salai, Chennai – 600 008. In charge: Prof. Gowhar Jhan, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Economics.

Venue: St Joseph’s College, Tiruchirapalli – 620 002. In charge: Prof. P. Stanly Joseph, Head of the Department, Department of Economics.

Venue: Arul Anandar College, Karumattur, Madurai – 625 514. In charge: Dr N Murali, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Economics.

Venue: PSG College of Arts and Science, Avinashi Road, Civil Aerodrome Post, Coimbatore 641 014. In charge: Dr R Naagarajan, Associate Professor, Dept of Economics.

2009-10:

The subject for the Essay Writing Competition during the year 2009-10 for Post graduate students of Economics was:

“Global Financial Crisis and India”

The Subject for the Elocution / Debating competition for Under graduate students of Economics was:

“Relevance of NREGS for employment creation”

This year (2009-10) the competitions were held in two centers viz., Thiagarajar College, Madurai for the students of Southern Districts of Tamilnadu on 15th February 2010 and at Presidency College, Chennai for the students of northern Districts of Tamilnadu on 19th February 2010. The subject was announced in advance. Along with cash award, certificates of merit were also given to the winners. There were 3 judges each in English & Tamil for the EWC and debating competitions selected locally.

Topics for this year's Essay Writing competitions will be:

Tamil: Role of Regulators in Market Economy: Analyse the Functions of a  Regulator in India

The essays will be evaluated by a panel of 3 judges  and there will be 3 prizes each in English and Tamil in each center;
